Coffee Tables Aren't Just for Feet

By: Rod Ernest

Coffee tables add pizzazz to your decor by making a room feel complete. When you add these tables to your living room or family room, you can create a distinct coziness to your seating areas. Some living or family rooms can be overwhelming in size. By adding a couple coffee tables near a sofa or a chair combination, they create mini seating areas which, in turn, foster a more comfortable and cozy atmosphere.
Because they highlight, or accentuate, a room's theme, they are sometimes known as accent tables. If a living room has a heavy country theme, coffee tables can hold baskets, bears, or other country decor items. They can also hold art pieces or knick knacks that keep with the country air. Because of this ability to highlight a room's theme, coffee tables can complete a room's decor.
Coffee tables can be used as end tables if there's not enough room in front of the sofa or group of chairs. Using them as end tables are the solution, and they can still hold home decor items. They can also be used for reading lamps, since this placement on the end of a sofa or to the side of a chair would be conducive to such lighting.
Coffee tables come in such a wide variety of styles that it may be hard to choose just one for your living room or family room. A good rule of thumb is to match it with the rest of your room's decor. Is your room more streamlined, where bold colors and hard lines rule? Then choose a sleek and boldly colored coffee table to complete the look.
If a room is less splashy and more muted in its color and more subtle in its lines, then a table that would blend in with that decor would be the wisest choice. You wouldn't want to place a neon green and sharply angled coffee table in a room that is full of roundness and pastels.
Additionally, coffee tables not only add style to your living room or family room, they can also be functional. Many such tables can help with your storage or organizational needs. Even though these tables sit low, most have at least one drawer underneath. This is great for storing small items. Some tables have shelves in the middle and on the sides. Others offer more storage via an old style trunk, where you can place seasonal items.
Since the accent table is so common in American homes, the coffee table book has come into its own. Coffee tables look good with oversized pictorial books on them. Many people purchase these books to decorate their tables because the covers are truly frame-worthy. These types of books are enjoyed visually and are rarely published or purchased for an in depth read.
Last but certainly not least, coffee tables can be quite comfortable, especially to your feet. There's nothing quite as relaxing after coming home from a stressful day as falling into your comfy chair and propping your feet up. Coffee-tables provide that much needed prop, as long as you can find a space amongst the home decor items.
In many ways, coffee tables are the unsung heroes of the home decor world. They complete the look of a room by accentuating the decor. They're also functional because they can serve as storage units or hold a much needed reading lamp. When you carefully consider the type of accent tables you want in your living room or family room, you'll be pleased at what all this little piece of furniture can do.
